The \u201cHappy Buddha\u201d most people recognize today \u2014 the round-bellied, smiling figure \u2014 is often mistaken for the Buddha<\/strong>, but surprise: he\u2019s actually a different<\/em> historical figure altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n His name was Budai<\/strong>, a Chinese monk who lived around the 10th century<\/strong> during the Later Liang Dynasty. Budai was known for wandering from village to village with a big sack (which is what his name literally means), sharing food, gifts, laughter, and wise-but-playful teachings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Unlike the serene, meditating Buddha of ancient India (Siddhartha Gautama), Budai was all about joy, generosity, and living lightly<\/strong>. He laughed often, owned very little, and reminded people not to take life \u2014 or themselves \u2014 too seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Budai\u2019s famously round belly symbolises:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Legend says rubbing his belly brings luck \u2014 but really, it\u2019s a reminder that true happiness comes from acceptance, presence, and simplicity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Budai didn\u2019t teach through long sermons. Instead, he taught by example \u2014 with humour, kindness, and compassion.
